What is the aim or goal of your writing:
"To create works of artistic/literary merit from my experiences and convictions which will both entertain and enlighten readers". 2nd ed. says, "Ever since winning the Ewing Award for Creative Writing at Hillsdale College in 1954, I have been steadily and seriously involved in creative writing. Had it not been an economic necessity, I would have never entered business but spent a lifetime creating novels, stories, and poems. The subconscious evolution of a book takes quite a long time for me--but once begun, I am capable of writing fast, fairly polished first drafts. After two self-edits, I consider my work ready for publication. My edior on my first published novel only changed three words in the book, and we quibbled over two of them. Both my first novel and the one I am working on are set in Michigan. The first short story I ever tried to market, 'Fanfare at Twelve' was third selection by Mademoiselle Magazine (they published the other two way back in 1953) while I was still in college. As a creative writer apprentice, I took 16 credit hours of Creative Writing at three schools under three different novelist professors, and they all singled out my work as outstanding and professionally publishable. Even so, it still took me many years to get a novel between hard covers. I did have experiences which were at once heartenting and disheartning, however when the first three major publishers I sent my novel to all wrote back personal, lenghty letters explaining that my book had passed one or two editors and had been recommended for publication only to be declined by the board specializing in sales market potential. I consider my work more literary (than pop market) which makes it all the more difficult to sell to a publisher.
