What is the aim or goal of your writing: 2nd ed. says, "I still think of myself as a Michigander. In fact, I have a hard time voting in New York because it still doesn't seem real that I live here. Also, I've spent a good deal of time on the West Coast, as well as the East Coast, and each convinces me that I am truly a Midwesterner. It has something to do with rhythm, the pace by which one lives one's life, measures one's words-space, how you think homes should be, like apartments always seemed too cramped and there's no storage-emphasis, like the West Coast aims for style, newness, relaxation while the East energizes work and the Midwest combines work and play with an emphasis on family. I also valued the community feeling which I loved and also chafed under in the Detroit Jewish community; other places are more spread out and anonymous. I know people all over the world feel and long for the same things. Still there is a definite sense of place and while others jokingly label Midwesterners boring, I like that quality which I see as full of steady, unchanging, family values and that slower place. I'm glad I grew up in Detroit."
