What is the aim or goal of your writing: 2nd ed. says, "If anything makes me a Michigan writer, though certainly not 'author', it's hardly my former, somewhat limited sojourn in the state. Rather, it's that I was exposed in Michigan to some of the people who influenced me most in my youth; the late Dr. Harold Basilius of Wayne University; the late Larry Henderson, night city editor of the Detroit News and favorite mentor of succeeding generations of young reporters; Charlie Haun, the former night city editor of the Detroit Free Press; and the first real-life author I'd ever met, old friend Glendon Swarthout." Contemporary Authors says, "Business histories, when done properly, are at least as interesting as 'regular' histories, and, I believe, more revealing of actual life; they involve personalities, ambitions, failures, successes, struggles, politics, economics, finances, international relations, social changes, natural resources, the environment--there's no aspect of existence that isn't reflected in the marketplace." He added, "Once you become a profesional writer, find two areas that interest you especially (in my case they are business history and the outdoors). Each provides a vacation from the other and helps you to keep your writing from getting stale."
