What is the aim or goal of your writing: I was a voracious reader as a child, hooked first by Dr. Seuss books and then Nancy Drew. I still remember how hard it was to put down The Mystery of the Old Clock, received Christmas of 1963. I read through dinner and took the book and a flashlight to bed - and was soon wondering if I could have a life like Nancy's, driving around, solving other people's problems and perhaps writing mysteries, too. Obsessed with reading, I loved entering worlds nothing like my own. I became a journalist, first copy editing and then later reporting in Alaska. I began writing novels that explore mother-son relationships in 1989 while working as a freelance writer and also teaching. I taught journalism at Southern Connecticut State University and writing at Yale University. Since 2005, I have written and edited for YaleGlobal Online, a free public-service magazine based at the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. I attribute my success as a writer to parents, teachers and librarians who instilled in me a love for reading and books; persistence and hard work; a patient husband; and an ability to observe and document the passions and worries of ordinary people.
