What is the aim or goal of your writing: I’ve known since a very early age that my calling was to be a writer; in fact, I tell the story in my children’s book Grammie’s Secret Cupboard. When I was four, my grandmother gave me a blank journal and asked me to write her a story. Although I pointed out that I didn’t know my alphabet book yet, she looked over her glasses at me and said, “You’re a story teller. Sit down and write a story and when you’re done, I’ll read it to you.” I scribbled, she looked every page over, then “read” me the most wonderful story. When she finished, I asked, “Did I write that story?” She told me, “When you grow up, you’re going to be a writer, and if you work hard at it, you’ll be a very good writer.” From that moment on, I knew what my calling would be. And I’ve worked very hard at it since then. I’ve always been a freelancer and I’ve worked for universities (Princeton, Tampa, Creighton), several newspapers and magazines, and began writing books in 2000. Writing is like every other art/craft—the more you do, the better you get. I think extensive reading is as essential as writing if a write.

May inquiries be sent to you about doing workshops, readings: Yes
I’d love to have queries sent. I enjoy public speaking, as well as school programs and professional development programs on writing.

Career:

Position Organization Location Date
- These days, I divide my time between writing and school/professional appearances. My family has moved several times, so my jobs reflect the moves. I’ve worked on newspaper staffs (St. Petersburg Times (twice), Omaha World-Herald, Hunterdon County (NJ) Democrat) and was a regular freelancer for magazines (Minnesota Monthly, MPLS/ST. PAUL, TAMPA, Prestige, Princeton Monthly, North Shore, among others). In the early 1980s, I was associate director of the Publications/Communications office at Princeton University, serving as media liaison and editor/senior writer for the Princeton Weekly Bulletin. Several years later, I became director of the same office at the University of Tampa; I created the university’s award-winning alumni magazine and completely revamped the university catalogue. In Duluth, MN, I created/wrote/edited an arts magazine for the St. Louis County Arts Council. Since moving to Michigan in 1999, I’ve freelanced for business journals, magazines, and newspapers.
I offer editing/book doctoring services.
