What is the aim or goal of your writing: X. J. Kennedy describes Daniel Hughes' poetry as "hard, subtle, and controlled...," adding: "In an excellent book that seems the finely chiseled product of years, he wins victories over much recalcitrant matter.... There is nothing tentative about his handling of his language, his merciless intelligence." Hughes is interested in Italian Renaissance art and history, poetic theory (especially Paul Valery and French symbolism), modern fiction (especially Nabokov and Bellow), modern poetry from Eliot to the present, and ancient historians and fathers of the church. He told CA, "My poetry seeks a cracked, if elegant, surface and a steady, mysterious depth."
