What is the aim or goal of your writing:
I'm trying to discover my meanings by writing stories and poems. I trust memory and imagination equally.
2nd ed. says, "What advice would you give aspiring writers? First, of course, read. Think and talk about what you read. Next, Practice. Practice! Regular routines work for many writers--rising early to write; or putting in so much time a day. Some days I start off by copying (or copy-changing) a poem that has in it some quality I want to practice. I also trick myself--put my attention on something like form or rhyme in order to free my un-self-conscious self. I believe in practicing, and in re-writing; I believe in 'the luck' that sometimes comes with practice and re-write. Poetry seems close to journal-keeping, or personal writing. Stories and essays seem written more for others, but poetry is more for oneself. I write mainly for myself, anyway. Friends who matter most to me now are writing friends."
