What is the aim or goal of your writing: 2nd ed. says, " If I were to point out one way for beginners to learn to write, it would be to take other languages than English and try translating small passages (poetry was my selection) into American language, in my time I have done other things but they have always been peripheral to my writing--and I have never stoppped writing, no matter what. My first published short story came about a year and a half after marriage and first child. It was a detective story for a 'pulp' magazine. They paid 1 cent a word, so my first check was $50.00. My wife and I were so excited we left Detroit and went to her hometown of Denver." There is a joy in writing that I have never found in any other occupation." His obituary in Petoskey News-Review (Petoskey, Michigan), October 22, 1984, stated "Ratigan was a true spinner of tales", and his family suggested memorials go to the William O. Ratigan Memorial Fund at Charlevoix Public Library, Charlevoix, Michigan.
