Tales from the Headlands
- Narrative on the Moravian immigrants who came to Michigan
Michigan History Adult Roseville, Mich. : Prescot Press 1972
What is the aim or goal of your writing: 2nd ed. says, "Headland...is a narrative on the Moravian (Czech) immigrants who came to the sugar beet fields of southeastern Michigan and northern Ohio during the period of 1904-14. I was born into this ethnic element and wished some day to tell the story of their progress, outlook, and fusion into American life. A fairly intensive survey of fifty-five representative families provided most of the information respecting the people themselves. My own reading, travel, and studies supply the rest of the book which treats with historical overseas background and the casual and intstitutional forces which influenced the Moravians, who incidentally, are more commonly, but less accurately, called 'Bohemians'. Very few were Czechs (Bohemians) although the Moravian is about as different from the Czech as an Iowan is different from a Nebraskan! For instance, the same written language is used and they are the same ethnically...only typical European regional standings distinguish them."
