The Root Cellar - Ray Karhu leaves an archaeological dig to tend to family matters in the Upper Peninsula. What he finds in his Aunt's cabin is a legacy he knew nothing about. Viena, a Karelian émigré, was a shaman keeping the magical tradition of healing and nature worship of the Arctic Finns alive in the north woods. Ray's struggle to accept, understand, and finally embrace this tradition takes him on a wrenching journey of exploration and discovery of the past and the present. Inspired by the Kalevala's mythic images, rhythms, and portends, this story evokes its own brand of magic. |

Untamola Blues - Untamola is the dreamworld from the Finnish epic, Kalevala, which Damrell evokes in the fictional Lake Superior port town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. United by circumstance, random happenstance, gullibility, and plain bad luck, the mostly Finnish American and Native American characters seek a dubious fortune in a desperate, illegal venture on the high seas. But since fortune tends to favor the foolish--although seldom as they anticipated it--all get their reward. In its use of classic comedy--as a subversive, moral force exposing the limitations and strictures of self-image and societal norms--this tale is a wild, hilarious, and at the same time, poignant take on the human condition. |

What is the aim or goal of your writing:
I hope some day to be able to write fewer drafts of my work before it is published. I have been writing steadily, albeit with brief interruptions for around twenty-two years. I've written books that will never see publication-thankfully. I write poetry, music, letters, and stories, none of which I publish. I am fascinated by language and by the art of writing. I've had many mentors, including many whom I've never met. I read constantly.
