What is the aim or goal of your writing: I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up (at 40 years old!), so I went back to college and earned a degree in English with an emphasis on creative writing. While I was there, several of my short stories were published in literary magazines (University of Michigan's Passages North was one). In my first novel I decided to "write what I know", and I knew the Michigan Upper Peninsula and the Swedes and Finns I grew up with. My success comes from constantly learning more about my craft and by never giving up. It took six years for my first novel to see publication.
