All Our Yesterdays: A Brief History of Detroit - Co-authored with Frank B. Woodford (father) |

What is the aim or goal of your writing:
As is obvious from my writings, my interest is in the fields of local history--Detroit and Michigan, and in the history of the Great Lakes. My father was a newspaperman for over thirty years, was a historian and author of eleven books, and at the time of his death was historiographer for the city of Detroit. So, I've grown up at home with history and the writing of history (I was ten when my father's first book was published). And, without question, one of my most memorable experiences was writing a book, All Our Yesterdays, with my father.
My approach to the writing of local history is to make it accurate, yet interesting, reading. History books do not have to be dull and stuffy. When I first began writing, my father's advice was to 'tell it as a story. Write as though you are sitting across a table from the person and telling [him or her] your story.' Following this philosophy, I have tried to include, within my books, stories and anecdotes that will help to bring local history alive for the reader. Hopefully, I have succeeded.
