What is the aim or goal of your writing:
3rd, ed. says, "As I considered how to answer this, I realized my basic aim in writing is deeply personal. I have kept notebooks and journals all my life, writing in prose and verse, sometimes daily, sometimes sporadically. I write to understand myself and life. An idea, a feeling, a situation set in words is made easier to judge for truth and relevance. Writing of times of delight, beauty, or wonder preserves them for vivid recall. Much as I relish the satisfaction of things published, and hope for more, still I am aware it is this habit of keeping notebooks that has added depth to the experience of being human. Both my 1950's books are based on notebook entries. Travel articles grew from running-comment notebooks during trips. Constant writing sharpens awareness. I value it as a way of life."
She lived near Sturgis, her home named 'Daybreak Hill', which is closely identified with the nature of her writing and the type of work she hoped to pursue.
2nd ed. says, " Shortly after the publication of 'Independent Bluebird', I took a school library job and its demands claimed all my attention, though I must admit I did considerable traveling in the summers, often on nature study and bird tours. I am interested in many things besides writing, and believe in living life on a basis of broad interests. Someone has said that librarians are generalists rather than specialists; I think that is very true in my case. There are so many facets and aspects to life, so many things at which to try one's hand, that to devote myself entirely to one thing would be to miss too much. At the same time, I write all the while, as part of my way of life. It sharpens my own awareness and deepens experiences."
