What is the aim or goal of your writing: I write and illustrate picture books and early chapter books because I love creating crazy new worlds for kids to explore. When I can, I like to sneak in "educational" elements so kids can learn a little something, maybe without even realizing it. I became interested in children's books the first year I worked as an illustrator at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, MO. I spent many lunch hours and weekends in a wonderful nearby children's bookstore looking for inspiration for the kids cards I was creating at work. I fell in love with children's books and knew I wanted to make my own some day. My big break came when Christy Ottaviano came across a manuscript I had submitted (The Scrambled States of America) to a junior editor at Henry Holt. She called me the day she read it with the exciting news that she wanted to publish it!
