Poetry Adult
What is the aim or goal of your writing: The power of words to comfort, to inspire, to make our world larger has been an important to me since I was young girl. Coping with the loss of my father I turned to books, especially poems, where I found beauty and reason. From the late nineties to the present, I have made a diligent study of the craft of poetry and have cultivated a voice which while serious, is not immune to humor and a kind of cautious optimism. Poets including Stephen Dunn, Tony Hoagland, David Kirby and Naomi Shihab Nye, as well as many of my peers, have been inspirations. Reflections about loss, art, food, and turning to beauty are themes in my work. The idea of being fed, whether to be nurtured by food, or by words is a recurring theme. I write exploring these ideas, knowing there are too many words—yet never enough. Having had the pleasure of owning an art gallery for many years my work is influenced, not only by the art, but the artists and the impulse for the art. I find that reaching out to be all that is human, and allowing oneself to be vulnerable is poignant and possesses a special dignity. I write every morning in search of an expression for something I’ve never quite articulated and in some cases wasn’t aware that I wanted to. Like pentimento, the reappearance of an earlier painting that had been covered over by a later painting, I seek to get beneath the layers to find the image that waits to be discovered.
