What is the aim or goal of your writing: 2nd ed. says, "Writing is more important than publishing." CA says, "I get up at 4:00 a.m. every morning to write before leaving for work. I work on individual poems until they 'feel' complete. Usually this means about 10 drafts, informal readings to friends and colleagues, and then a draft or two for fine tuning. There are poems that have taken extended periods (more than a year), but usually the process takes about a week. Working longer on poems seems to rob them of life and rivet them to the page. The works of many poets have influenced my work. Among the most important are William Stafford, Robert Hayden, Tom Raworth, Anselm Hollo, Ted Berrigan, Donald Hall and Frank O'Hara. With the exception of O'Hara, all these poets have been generous with their comments. Still, the works of these writers have been most influential. It seems to me that the contemporary scene does not broaden the audience for poetry it should. We seem to add to the audience of poetry by adding poets. The availability of free money through the National Endowment for the Arts encourages the publishing of much work that would be better left on the shelf. I take exception to the idea that publishers and writers need to be placed on this kind of 'relief'. Poets need to write more poems to people and fewer to fellow poets."
