- From The Morning Sun,April 12, 2013: Ray was employed 40 years in the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, starting in 1943 as a forest fire lookout in Clare County in 1943. During college he worked with the DNR as a student conservation aide, moving to a game area manager, and in 1951 was promoted to game biologist near East Lansing. In 1955, he transferred to state headquarters at Lansing and supervised a state-wide predator research project. In 1961, he became district game supervisor at Gaylord for the eight northern counties of southern Michigan. In 1964 he was back at Lansing as the administration assistant of the Game Division, and supervised the Federal Aid programs for the DNR. In 1977, Ray returned to the Wildlife Division to head up the northern land management unit. In 1980, he was appointed as Acting Director of the Wildlife Division of the DNR, continuing in this position until his retirement in 1984.
