What is the aim or goal of your writing:
2nd ed. says, "Teaching has opened many new experiences in my own work. Poetry is a magical device, a work of shamans. Personal transformation is its reward. Poetry is discovery and is visual, can change into air and exist at that and be satisfying."
Contemporary Authors says "My advice to young writers is: to write everyday, to pay attention to how you use language, what you repeat, what image recurs, question yourself always--`Why do I see this when this is beside it'--read, if the writer's work impresses you, study it, look at its grammar, punctuation, paragraphing, what words are used, look at it `outloud,' listen to how it fits in the ear, study, find other writers, share not only your work, but the works of others which impress you. And write with humor--that is not saying `to be funny,' but with wit--so that you are willing to listen to criticism. Writing in great seriousness can impede process because it can create defensiveness in you and keep you from responding to genuine criticism. Always be vulnerable on the page, scare yourself--this and writing with humor do go together--when you are at your most vulnerable, you connect more immediately into the lives of others."
