What is the aim or goal of your writing:
2nd ed. says, "Despite the books, my first interest is as a painter."
Carrick began drawing as a child growing up in Dearborn, MI, but he first put his creative skills to use as a high school student working as an apprentice sign painter. Traveling around Michigan, he spent his summers and weekends painting billboards. That led him eventually to take a job as an advertising artist in Detroit, and later--after serving in Germany with the U. S. Army--in New York City. The time Carrick spent in Europe kindled his desire to do more creative work, and so he saved enough money to return to Europe, where he practiced painting in Spain, Greece, and the Vienna Academy of Fine Art. Carrick first became interested in doing illustrations for books when he collaborated with Robert Goldston on 'The Civil War in Spain'. It was not long after he completed this book that Carrick and his wife wrote and illustrated the first of many books they would do together, 'The Old Barn'. Both Donald and Carol loved nature, so many of their works involve animals and natural settings. A dedicated and productive illustrator and painter thoughout his career, Carrrick continued to work industriously even after he learned he had terminal cancer. His wife once commented in an interview, "After Don was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he worked on Jim Latimer's book and had at least four more books to do at the time of his illness. I think he hoped that he would be able to do them all."
