Water under the bridge : poems from the Elk Rapids Elders Project - Water Under the Bridge is a beautiful blend of oral history, storytelling and poetry from the Elders Project of Elk Rapids. Their poetry vignettes, collected and written over four years, recall everything from a grandfather who survived the Great Chicago Fire, oxen grazing in an Elk Rapids park and farm life around Elk and Torch lakes to WPA clothes during the Great Depression, going off to war, love, marriage and the rescue of a pair of horses that broke through the ice on Elk Lake. |

What is the aim or goal of your writing:
"Through my work I try to show how the written and oral traditions of literature enhance each other. When people talk, there are ideas and lines of poems going off in the air like firecrackers. It is the poet's job to catch and store these moments, borrowing and building off of earlier voices, until you become an oracle of voices past and present, as well as your own. It is these voices, condensed into poetry, that provide us with a unique and valuable way to preserve our personal or community myths for the examination and enjoyment of contemporary and future generations."

Poet Bard
- Terry has taken his performance poetry and writing workshop program to many thousands at K-12 schools, colleges, libraries, conferences and festival from coast to coast. Performing from a nine-hour oral repertoire, he weaves classic literature, ancient, contemporary and children’s poetry, as well as his own work rich in humor and lore into an entertaining and educational program. His workshops include The Elders Project, which takes oral history interviews and turns them into narrative poetry; to those that combine writing, speaking, listening and artistic components to strengthen literary skills. He is a two-time recipient of Michigan Creative Artist Awards and a Master or Ceremonies to Michigan’s Poetry Out Loud program. With a bioregional focus on people and place, Terry has written poems on diverse topics that range from Ernie Harwell radio broadcast of the Detroit Tigers baseball games to shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. |

Builder and Host
- The Stone Circle is a triple ring of large boulders forming a natural amphitheater with a center firepit as a hypnotic focus. The circular arrangements of boulders and setting were designed by Terry to capture the atmosphere of ancient cultures that gathered in community groups to exchange stories of everyday life and lore. Today the Stone Circle is reminiscent of a time before television, radio and computers, when bards spun their tales to an enchanted audience. At this Stone Circle every Saturday evening from mid-June through Labor Day Weekend, Terry is host to other poets, storytellers, musicians and an audience of young and old who stir their tales in the communal brew that this unique recipe for communication offers. |
