What is the aim or goal of your writing: First, I come from a family of workaholics, for better and for worse. My father was an engineer and textile plant manager, and my mother sold real estate. Working hard is a good quality for starting a business. My dad respected all the little unglamorous details of work, and I turned out a lot like him, to my surprise. In publishing, if you can't reach readers by getting on newsstands or bookstore shelves, it doesn't matter how good your stuff is. Then you have to get people to read your stuff, which depends on clear editing and good layout. I learned most about writing from two outstanding high school English teachers and from my friends on the school paper staff. Suburbs like Webster (akin to Birmingham or East Grand Rapids in Michigan) are in many ways rootless places - stops on the corporate ladder for parents and launch pads for kids to go off to "good" colleges and to careers far and wide. With me, at a certain point, I became more intersted in going BACK, not onward and upward. I started piecing together the worlds of my grandparents and great-grandparents, who included an immigrant tailor, farmers, a foundry worker, and a coal merchant. Through none lived in Michigan, aspects of their backgrounds are all around us here. I feel that in Michigan, if we understand our families and neighbors (taking a large view of who our neighbors are, to include people in the cities and counties around us), we'll soon connect up with people halfway around the world. That's one of the great things about our state: its social variety.
