What is the aim or goal of your writing: 2nd ed. says, "My writing is derived from the African-American cultural tradition, particularly from the work of the great African-American song lyricists Little Walter Jacobs, Sonny Boy Williamson, Jimmy Reed, Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson and Don Robey, and from the jazz rhythms of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Cecil Taylor, Theonious Monk, Sony Rollins, Gene Ammons, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Ornette Colman and their peers in modern music. LeRoi Jones (Ameer Baraka), A. B Spellman, James Baldwin, Billie Holiday and Toni Morrison-among thousands of others have taught me intelligence and its rhythmic applications. That I am of Scotch-Irish-English descent only underscores the effect of the African-American cultural tradition in shaping my work. I must also name the poets Ezra Pound, Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, Michael McClure, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Henry Miller; the exhilerating experience of inhabiting the city of Detroit; and the three years I spent as a prisoner of the State of Michigan as prime forces in my life to date."
