Wakoski offers this advice: Don't leave your day job, but make poetry your real job. Read everything from high to low--more classics than trash, though--and write everything as if it's for an audience, for you lower your standards when you write just for yourself. Finally, give yourself some privacy. Poetry is not a group effort.
