What is the aim or goal of your writing: I feel fortunate to have earned the enthusiastic support of my own community--a community that initially encouraged me to launch a writing career. I started writing professionally for my local daily newspaper, where I garnered a great deal of encouragement from editors and readers, which in turn made it easier for me to land a magazine editorship and ultimately publish in many national markets. And while my work has been published nationally, I still consider myself a community journalist at heart. It is my responsibility to produce my best work for the readers closest to me--before branching beyond my community. I believe every writer has a gift, something to share with others. The size (or location) of any writer's "market" isn't as important as how she delivers her message. If a message is meant to reach a wider audience, it will. But there's nothing wrong with staying local, or blooming where you are planted. If you're lucky enough to have a readership of any size, you must value it and respect it.
