What is the aim or goal of your writing:
"To what do I attribute my success? Stubbornness, mainly, and a finely honed sense of denial--both of which proved very important when it came to dealing with the literally hundreds of rejection slips that came before my supposedly "sudden" success. That, and a lot of hard work, not only in the writing, but more importantly, in the rewriting. I rewrote my first novel a half dozen times in three years and threw out over three undred pages in t he process. This was all done while I was also holding down a full-time job with the Environmental Protection Agency in Ann Arbor (which, among other things, meant a 75 mile, round-trip commute every week day). The whole thing was pretty grueling and all throughout the process, I worried that I wouldn't be up to the task. I also knew, however, that I couldn't live with myself if I didn't try. And so I pushed forward, devoting my evenings and weekends and my too-few vacation days to the project until it was finished. I should mention that Congress helped at the tail-end of the project. When Newt Gingrich and company decided to shut down the government in late 1995, i was in the last stages of revising Rapture for publication, and the extra free time came in handy. Pretty ironic, huh--especially given that partricular Congress' attitude toward arts in general."
