What is the aim or goal of your writing: 2nd ed. says, "I find the creative process an individual, and highly personal thing, an experience that varies with every effort. Often, for me, a poem will write itself: it springs full blown from my mind, needing only to be set on paper. Occassionally, however, an idea will dance tantilizingly just beyond my reach and a dozen attempts will fail to capture it fully, always though, there is the conviction that the thought or emotion MUST find expression--that the poem WILL be written; and always there is a sense of completion when it assumes its final form. The most valuable gift any writer possesses is his individuality, that unique quality that sets his work apart from every other writer's. It is well for a young poet to be exposed to good poetry while learning technique, but it is a mistake for him to imitate another's style slavishly. The first, and best, piece of advice every poet should follow is to be himself."
